Melissa Slaiger, Supervisor Of Student Life & Outreach
For the past 15 years, Melissa has dedicated her career to serving students in urban core schools, believing deeply in the power of education to break cycles and transform lives. Her journey has included roles as an English teacher, Behavior Specialist certified in Restorative Practices, Dean of Students, Chief of College and Career, and Student Life and Outreach Coordinator—each one reinforcing her commitment to student success. She even stepped in as an interim music teacher for a time, recognizing that education is about meeting students where they are and fostering every talent they bring. Since joining Nowell Academy in 2015, after working in the Central Falls School District, Melissa has been inspired by its mission: to uplift and empower students who are starting their families or who have struggled in traditional schools, where it is easy to fall by the wayside.
These students are her “why.” High schoolers are her favorite because watching them discover who they are and who they want to become is what drives her every day. As the Post Secondary Success coordinator, Melissa stresses to her students the importance of education and focused training as a means for a more successful future in both their careers and family life. She believes in holding high expectations while providing warm, demanding love and care, placing a strong emphasis on the importance of community so that all students feel a true sense of belonging—where they are seen, valued, and supported.
Above all, she believes that every student needs a champion, and she is passionate about being one. Outside of school, she enjoys spending time with her family and four dogs, making music, and soaking up the warmth of the sun whenever possible. Melissa holds a BA in Secondary Education English from Rhode Island College and an MA in Education and School Counseling from Providence College.
